Bruny Island

As the cruise to the Iron Pott had been a lot of fun, I set off on another tour on the water. I travelled to Kettering (ferry connection to Bruny Island) and was picked up by the bus there. From there we crossed over to Bruny Island. Note: There are three options for the cruise. Start from Hobart, start from Kettering or start from Bruny Island (Adventure Bay). If you travel from Kettering, you don’t need to worry about the ferry with your car. Sometimes it gets quite full, so you will have to wait for several transfers. However, as the ferry crosses every 20 minutes during the week, there are no long waiting times.

After crossing over, we stopped at The Neck Game Reserve Lookout, which lies in the centre of the isthmus between North and South Bruny Island. From here, two sections of beach face each other, one facing north-west, i.e. inland, and the other facing open water, where the continental slope begins at some point.

Unfortunately, there was only about half an hour for a snack when we arrived by bus. However, with 3 hours in a small boat on the water with swells of 2.5 metres in places, you should have eaten well beforehand (with as little meat as possible) to keep nausea and dizziness to a minimum. Before the start, there was a short briefing and ginger drops were offered to help prevent seasickness. There was plenty to see during the journey down the coast. Rock formations over 200 metres high, blowholes, seals, of course birds and lots of geological background information. We didn’t see any dolphins or whales on this tour.

After the tour, I had a look around the Pennicott Wildlife Centre and saw both cormorants and a white bellied eagle. Shortly before leaving, four wallabies appeared next to the centre, comfortably gnawing on branches and greenery lying around.
